It is spring, and that means it’s time for transition. It happens every year around this time, and it is the process where the overseeded winter grass begins to die out from the heat, and the summer grass is just breaking out of its winter dormancy. It is every golf course’s desire to have a “seamless transition,” i.e., where the transition does not affect golf course conditions too negatively. This transition is managed with three processes: chemical, mechanical, and Mother Nature. We rely on a combination of all three to remove the winter grass while nurturing and encouraging the dormant bermudagrass to fill in. We anticipate a smooth transition this year due to the health of the bermudagrass going into winter last year. However, we did have a colder and wetter winter than usual. It is too early to determine if that is going to have a negative effect on the transition.
